In which I discuss the fact that I'm losin' it

Some of you might remember that I made advent calendars for our grandies...two were mailed in time for the boys to enjoy last Christmas but of course our wee granddaughter wasn't quite born yet.  I, however, knew she was coming and made her an advent in preparation for THIS Christmas and tucked it away.  Last month I put it in with a box of goodies heading out their way and felt quite smug knowing that I was on top of things.  Well.  You can pretty much guess that wasn't the END of the story!  Over the weekend we received a call from our mystified son wondering just how they were supposed to attach the cross stitched ornaments TO the advent.  Turns out I had totally overlooked sewing the buttons onto it...so there went my feeling of smugness.  Good thing she's not quite a year old yet and doesn't know what an advent even is!  It will be returned to me and I will do what I should have in the first place.  Serves me right for not checking it over before I sent it!  And why, I ask you, didn't I put the buttons on when I was making it??  One of the great mysteries of life.

For lack of any better pictures to share with you, thought I'd show you how I packaged the snowflake soaps I showed you earlier.  Pretty simple packaging - wrapped in Saran, a little bit of curling ribbon, and a sprig of holly berries 'harvested' from a cheap dollar store wreath.

The quote of the day..."If an egg is broken by an outside force, life ends.  If broken by an inside force, life begins.  Great things always begin from the inside"

  1. Sorry thar happened. Would hook and loop work instead of buttons?
The pipe cleaner tree link, very nice! I can see on a smaller scale, a tree bunting.

    1. Unfortunately velcro won't work in this case - the ornaments I made all have loops that are meant to slip over a button. No worries, it's on the way back to me and I will add buttons and ship it back.

    1. Sometimes keeping things simple is the way to go - this was pretty easy. Every year I buy a berry wreath at the dollar store and 'harvest' the berries for use as little bits of decor here and there.

Sherry of createology: Oh Dear MA…and of all the buttons you have! Excellent links once again. My daughter is raising chickens and I completely understand this quote from her experiences. Google Chenille Stems instead of Pipe Cleaners. Blessings of the Full Cold Mooon!

    1. Yes, it's not that it would have been such a chore to find appropriate buttons!! Chenille stems might be a good 'google' - anything similar I've seen here come in packs of multi-colours and it would take a ton in order to get enough green ones to make one of those trees.

  4. Even though I've been ruthlessly giving away and donating fabric tote bags to reduce my personal collection, I still can't resist looking at new ones!

    1. Me too! I have enough tote bags but that's not to say I don't covet a new one now and then.

  5. As is often said, it is the thought that counts Mary Anne and your son's family will know the love that went into the calendar. Next year your little granddaughter will be that much older and more able to appreciate it! Hugs Christine xx

    1. Good thing thoughts do count because I can manage to flub things up better than anyone I know! You're right though, she'll maybe appreciate it next year.

  6. I like the linked zero waste holiday article. Being a frugal use it upper, make art with waste material etc person, give and receive services, not stuff, I liked her ideas.

Funny about the do over required for the calendar!

  7. Sounds like me, "I'll do it later..." then forget about it!

    1. Lesson learned - if I make something check it before I mail it!

  8. Ahhh, well sometimes things just happen for a reason... You want to use girly buttons for this calendar and didn't have any at the time, now you have some.

The zero waste article was very interesting.

    God bless.

    1. Hah - I have enough buttons to add to a hundred advent calendars (and probably still wouldn't make much of a dent in my collection!). I don't know why I completely forgot to add them.

  9. I'm sorry, but am also relieved that other people do things like this, and not just me. I can't blame it on age, either. Just ask my poor mother. LOL

  10. That's a funny story! I expect it will become the source of some sort of annual family joke.

    1. I have no doubt it will, knowing the sense of humour in this family!

  11. Oh no! I can totally see myself doing that. And yes... it's always good to have a family story to laugh over. :) I'm going to read that article more thoroughly. BTW... I put the Zero Waste Chef book on my Amazon WL. No one seems to be shopping from it, though. :^/

    1. Well at least if they're laughing at me they're leaving someone else alone...hee hee. And in my experience nobody ever looks at my Amazon wish list either - even me.
