Sunday and Monday we heard a whole lot of cracking and crashing as limbs and entire trees came down due to the load of ice. Now we hear the sound of many chainsaws as people deal with the aftermath. All in all we had over an inch of ice in about 24 hours. We were extremely fortunate that there was no wind or it would be doubtful if we'd have power for days. As it was, we lost power twice - once for over five hours and the second for just over 24 hours. Luckily the RC and I have lots of blankets and wearing multiple layers of clothes helped keep us warm. Luckily, too, we have a can opener and could scrounge things like cold beans in our pantry. UPDATED NOTE: They're saying there's another ice storm heading our way, although not supposed to be as bad. If I disappear for a day or so, you'll know the power has gone out again.
- THIS would be a great use for an orphan quilt block.

Today's quote is from Maya Angelou..."Every storm runs out of rain"
Sorry to hear there may be more weather coming your way. Here's hoping it's brief and not so severe, if it comes at all.
ReplyDeleteRight now it's a nasty east wind which doesn't bode well. We're concerned that, even if this second storm isn't as severe, that the wind will bring down already precarious trees and power lines. We will wait and see and pray it's a non-event.
DeleteOhmygosh--cold beans!! Well. some protein anyway--right???to help keep you warm! But still!! ;(((
ReplyDeleteOur experience with long power outtages happened in the Summer so we could use our grill thankfully. That led us to get a generator system just in case of events like your ice storms!!
Sorry you had to go through that --not fun at all.
Thanks for the link to the small quilt patterns--I've bookmarked that one;))) Hugs for warmer days--Julierose
Cold beans - yeah, not my favourite. Sadly we live in an apartment complex so can't have a generator or we'd be getting one. This morning we went out and bought a big Thermos and the RC is heating up some stew to have ready, just in case.
DeleteHi MA: We had a ice storm on Monday, then snow yesterday, now it will be raining, oh my gosh I long for summer and hot weather.
ReplyDeleteI am in love with the ironing board idea, thank-you for the link.
Stay warm and dry.
Catherine
Hope you're doing okay Catherine. Sounds like you got a trifecta of weather. Be safe!!
DeleteYou really have been through it lately. Do you have any emergency foil blankets? They're not expensive and they go over your coverings to trap body heat, very effectively. We had them for Handsome Partner, given as part of a care kit. They also protect against excessive heat if the AC goes out.
ReplyDeleteNow that's a thought! I forgot we have some of those blankets in the car for emergencies and can go and get them if need be. Might try to pick a couple more up to have in the apartment. This morning we went out and bought a big Thermos and the RC is currently heating up some stew so we can have something hot if the power goes out again.
DeleteSherryofcreateology: Oh I remember living in the snow and ice and being without power for a week at a time. Cold beans is better than no beans. I hope your next storm is very mild and you have power. Please stay safe and warm.
ReplyDeleteWe are extremely lucky because at the moment we have power (and internet) - there are a lot of areas still without. Now with the wind and another storm on the way, we're trying to do what we can to be prepared.
DeleteI hope the storm misses you. Not sure what I could find in my pantry other than salmon, tuna and a canned ham. Guess we wouldn't starve as I always have some sort of bread handy as well.
ReplyDeleteGod bless.
It's nasty out there tonight - ice pellets, windy and slippery. Now it's turning to rain as the temperatures are supposed to rise overnight, but now there's a rain warning in effect. I know the contents of our pantry will be changing somewhat to have items that we can eat in an emergency.
DeleteI hope you have power and things are warming up soon!
ReplyDeleteSo far so good (10:30 pm) but it's windy so hopefully it won't bring down more trees onto the power lines. Supposed to warm up tomorrow.
Deletebrrrr - an inch of ice?!? makes me shiver just thinking about it ... keep that Thermos full, just in case, cuz iced coffee in an ice storm is a bad idea!!! here's hoping it all just changes its mind and stops being nasty. take care.
ReplyDeleteI think there was actually more than an inch but that's what was accumulated on our balcony railing. Yes, the thermos is full, just in case.
DeleteI hope you're doing well. Lots of rain and wind down here this week, but it's not been cold. And so far, we haven't lost power in any of our storms this spring.
ReplyDeleteWe were just fortunate that the outside temps weren't absolutely frigid so bundling up in blankets kept us warm enough. Cleanup is still ongoing and will be for quite awhile I think. There are still areas with no power. Workers from other provinces have come to help get things back online for which we are very grateful.
