Little knitting

Remember all those mittens I made earlier?  Well, some of the leftover yarn has been turned into a couple of pairs of socks for the littlest grandsons.

These are pretty simple to make - they're a 'take' on the spiral socks that apparently will fit kids better/longer than those with proper heels knitted in. They look really skinny, but I can get my whole hand inside them so they stretch really well. I started at the top with 48 stitches for our 1 year old and 56 stitches for our 4 year old (and I'll use 60 stitches for our 6 year old)...did about half an inch of K1, Pl at the top and then switched to K2, P2 until I got to the toe.

Here's what I did for the toe...
1.  (K6, k2tog)
2. (and all even rows) K
3. (K5, K2tog)
5. (K4, K2tog)
7. (K3, K2tog)
9. (K2, K2tog)
11. (K1, K2tog)
12. K
Weave yarn through stitches left on the needle, tighten and weave ends in.    ****Just remember, if you're making these, the number of cast on stitches has to be divisible by 6**** (UPDATED TO ADD:  I used sock yarn (fingering weight) and 2.5 mm needles)

    3. Might as well use up at least some of the leftovers - I still have a bunch more though and debating what I'll do with them.

  2. If only we would all think about our health care workers and first responders, then we would behave in a more appropriate and unselfish manner every day. They are the heroes of our times, aren't they. As for those socks, they are fabulous. Love the colours. Love too, that star. I will have to save it for later.

    1. Yes, our health care workers and first responders (even in normal times) deserve all the accolades they can get. Where would any of us be without them.

  3. You made 2 pair of socks since the mittens!!! Color me impressed. I am still on my first sock and ended up frogging this morning :-/

    1. Don't get TOO excited! These socks are little - for a 1 year old and a 4 year old - so they don't take too long to make. No heels to turn either which makes it a whole lot quicker.

  4. I love the spiral socks, made several pairs for friends. This is a cool adaptation. I expect their Mom will be pleased.

    1. I toyed with making the spiral version but wondered why I couldn't just use a K2, P2 throughout (much less brain-power required!!) and I think they worked out fine.

  5. The socks look good, lovely and warm for a Canadian winter! And the picture is fascinating, it took me a short while to realise that all the super heroes were bowing to the medical staff. DO you mind if I use it on Facebook?

    1. Thank you Jenny - for the comment and the nice words! As for the picture I found it on the internet so it's not mine - so I think it's okay to share it. I just made sure I kept the proviso attached that the origin is unknown.

  6. Those are cool socks - not only in that you made them using left-over yarn, but that they are knit in a tube. We wore tube socks in the 70's - maybe into the 80's. I don't know why it never occurred to me that one could hand-knit tube socks. Huh.

    1. They still sell tube socks - our kids still wear them. I think they might be sold as 'sport socks' now, but same thing.

    1. Simple knitting is all I ever do. Anything that requires concentration isn't going to happen!

  8. Wonderful socks MA, I've saved the pattern and thank you, for that. The cartoon is Fabulous and we should honour our medical staff for the dangerous, exhausting work they repeatedly carry out. and I DO like your quote.

    1. Glad you like the socks - pretty simple to make and hopefully the kids will like them. That drawing struck a cord with me, for sure, so felt it should be shared.

  9. I love the socks! Great start block!
Not sure about the crochet bag, I think it could be very heavy.

    1. I like the socks too (might be tempted to use up more scraps and make some for myself!).

  10. That hospital image is very spot on. I've been taking my mother to the hospital and various labs and doctor's offices since last week as she had a stroke. They were all so very helpful. With budget cuts and the pandemic I didn't know what to expect. They are good people.

    1. I don't know where we'd be in these times without those medical heroes and support staff. I hope your Mom does well with the treatments and is soon doing better.
