Mysteries, bread and such

Oh, sweet mysteries of life - or maybe it's ghosts?  Lately there have been some decidedly 'odd' things happening here at Chez Magpie.  First of all, I discovered quite a sizeable chunk of the countertop veneer in the our bathroom had disappeared.  Gone.  You'd think it would be on the floor and be swept up, but no.  Resident Chef claims no knowledge of what happened and I certainly didn't do it.  So...gone, who knows where.  Incident #2 - a brand new (only washed a couple of times) kitchen towel developed a rather large hole in the middle.  Can't figure THAT one out either.  AND....the biggest mystery of all.....we were both engrossed in something (he - jigsaw puzzle, me - sewing) when suddenly there was a gigantic crash.  After checked to be sure the other of us was okay we started to investigate and discovered a plastic tote had quite literally jumped off the shelf in our storage room.....launched itself halfway across the room....and landed upside down on the floor.  Okay.  Hmmm.  First of all nobody was near it, nobody had touched it for months, and nobody had touched anything even remotely near it for months (top shelf - rarely used stuff).  Secondly....just HOW did it get to the edge and leap off?  Thirdly, and the biggest mystery of all, HOW in the world did it not only fall off the shelf but launch itself half way across the room while it was at it?  The contents were heavy so you'd think it would simply pretty much fall straight down.  Yep....spooks.  Now, if they'd just decide to leave a bunch of money lying around.....

Over the past couple of days I've done a 'oh look, squirrel!' and sidetracked myself into making this little guy....

He's a baby Baby Yoda, measuring about 9" tall,  to accompany the big Baby Yoda I already made for our #2 grandson (altho' I secretly think it was for his daddy!).  Anyway, my thought process was that maybe, because he has a new baby brother, perhaps he would like to play 'big bro, little bro' with the Yoda's.  And besides, I used up some stash yarn!  The pattern came from HERE.

The question arose about the beer bread recipe we've been making so thought I'd share it here...

BEER BREAD
4 c. all purpose flour
3 heaping tsp. baking powder
1 heaping tsp. baking soda
1 tsp. salt
1/4 c. white sugar
473 ml can beer (regular, not the light)

Sift dry ingredients together REALLY well.  Mix with
beer and pour into greased loaf pan.  Brush with
melted butter.  Bake 1 hour @ 375 degrees.
Remove from pan and cool at least 15 mins.
NOTE:  do not use light beer or it won't rise.

  1. Earthquake? Earth subsidence? The container leap. Mice? The veneer disappearances and towel issue? Very weird stuff anyway.

    1. Well it hadn't better be mice! No little furry creatures here, fortunately. No earthquakes either....at least nothing else shook so can't be that. Spooks, for sure.

  2. Oh those iced coffees--yummy--I love it in the Summer--I only add a smidge of sweetner (sugar, honey whatever) though...
brown sugar is nice...too oh and perhaps a bit of cocoa powder --amazing eye opener for the afternoon snoozers...

    1. I love coffee - iced OR hot. In the summer we often add a little of one of the flavoured liquid creamers to our iced coffee - yum. Grey skies all day here too, and very windy.

  3. I can imagine what your so-called spook might look like. Maybe like a big Baby Yoda! A couple of years ago, some of my best stuff ~ my favorite cloth needle book, my favorite sofa,... ended up with mysterious holes in them. Momma Yoda, I think! And, aren't they cuties!

    1. I really wonder about the mysterious things that happen at times - we often have no explanation for it. There are only two people in this household and if neither one of us is guilty, one wonders. Interesting about the holes in your sofa though!!

  4. WHAT??? Now one of those things would be odd but combined . . . 'who ya gonna call? Ghostbusters!' Hahaha! I thought of you today when I began sorting my fabric scraps and thinking what am I going to do with all of these. Then I thought, I know - I'll go to Maryann's blog and find some small projects! I'll let you know what I decide!

    1. Can't tell you how often I want to call Ghostbusters!! Must admit it's nice to know that I'm 'known' as a go-to for small project ideas.

  5. Woohwooh~ maybe Casper doesn't like this stay at home stuff and wants you out of the house for a bit so they can have a "spirited" party- heehee.
    Baby Yoda is a hoot!

    1. Hmmm - maybe you have a point about Casper! He/they can party all they want as long as they don't keep me awake at night.

  6. He's Adorable!
Loud crashes are usually explained by reenacting the event. A large rodent could be the culprit. Not a happy thought looking for evidence of it. I've found holes in kitchen towels that I think got caught on a utensil.

    1. Can't be any type of rodent here - cement block structure so they can't get in, plus we're on the third floor so even more unlikely. Plus the door into the storage room is closed unless we're in there so nothing can get in. Good thing because I hate rodents!!

  7. Casper - lol. Two thoughts... He's tired of being ignored so he's getting unignorable. Or he's tired of this lockdown and thinks maybe he can spook you out so he can have some time alone. Your second YODA is adorable. LOVE!

    1. Yes, I think we must have a resident Casper - at least he's a friendly ghost so he's welcome. Mind you, he's obviously having a few naughty moments!

  8. Weird doings at Chez Magpie indeed. I hope it wasn't the hot water service blowing up that shook the bag from the shelf. We had a mystery half tomato disappear from the fridge, overnight. I don't eat them and DH swears he did not. Totally weird! Love baby Yoda- printed out the spice blends- thanks for sharing that one. I love your blogs- never a dull moment.

    1. It's catching! Maybe your fridge had the nightime munchies? Glad you think there's never a dull moment when you come here - mostly I think my mumblings are downright yawn-worthy.

  9. Two of your dear friends are saying 'goodbye'. Acknowledge them. They may visit from time to time but nothing drastic will happen. Love your Yoda by the way!

  10. What a cute little Yoda! The ghosts or whatever I could live without...lol....And thank you for the links....I crochet a bit but my attempts at knitting have not gone well...I really enjoyed the Bee Article....I have a trumpet vine that they love and they seem to really enjoy the birdbath!

    1. I didn't take up knitting until recent years after a couple of failed attempts in the past. I still don't make complicated things and I probably never will, but I'm enjoying what I do make. Glad you liked the bee link!

  11. Ha. Ha. Sure you don't have a mouse or squirrel self isolating with you? When things jump off shelves and throw themselves across the room we usually think of earthquakes. Baby yoda is a cutie.

    1. Nope, no four legged critters in our apartment....and as far as we know there was no earthquake (I'm sure it would have make the news if there was). We don't live in an area that is known for earthquakes, luckily.

  12. Our son had an experience that was quite baffling too. He has lived in his current house for about 8 years. Two weeks ago, one evening while watching tv (downstairs) he heard a big bang. He went upstairs to investigate and discovered one whole side of his walk-in shower had shattered. After all this time!!

    1. Wow! A shattered shower wall sure tops my leaping box! Wonder what on earth would cause that to happen...could it have been because it's getting used more during the isolation perhaps.

  13. Love your baby Yoda, he's a lot of fun! Hope you find the answer to your mysteries.... or perhaps it would be better not to find out what is behind them!! Christine xx

    1. I seriously don't want to find out what caused the mystery - it's far more fun this way!

    1. Thank you Sherry, but actually this little Yoda is done in crochet. I'm a much better crocheter than a knitter. Been crocheting since I was 12 but only took up knitting in recent years.

  15. Sounds like it could be a naughty kitty! Very strange indeed.
I love your Baby Yoda, so adorable!
Thanks for the recipe, I might just wait until DH brews again so I can add some of the grains.

    1. If we HAD a kitty it could be the reason, but we don't! I'd be interested in knowing if you try the bread using the grains. We don't brew our own nor do we drink it other than perhaps once or twice a year so I'm not overly familiar with the process.
