Over the past few days I've been undertaking my yearly deep shovel-out of my sewing space.  It's still ongoing but at least there's been some progress.  I would like to know why, though, that nothing looks as if it's changed!!!

While I was shoveling, I also took time to do some using up.  I had a number of pieces of fabric that had been lurking in my stash for more years than I care to count, so I took some of it and actually DID something with it.  Voila.....

Nine pillowcases!!

Today is another anonymous quote..."Four things you can't recover....the stone after the throw, the word after it's said, the occasion after it's missed, the time after it's gone"

  1. Bless your heart
I've been clearing out fabric, and, gave a small pile away from the 1st bin. Today, the ironing board is up and waiting as I gather clothes to repair. Pillowcases are now on my list!

    1. If you haven't already, google 'burrito style pillowcase patterns' (or similar wording)....they are SO easy to make!

  2. Wow! Nine pillowcases you did very well.... a great start to the year! It's really funny how sorting out your sewing space never seems to make a great deal of difference no matter how much 'stuff' you get rid of.... seems to be one of life's little mysteries!! Christine xx

    1. Yes, it's definitely a mystery why my room still is bulging at the seams! It's still a giant mess but I"m seeing an end to it. Can't wait to get finished so I can mess it up doing something fun!

    1. I remember hearing somewhere that you should start a new year in the manner to which you would like it to continue, so what better thing than to use up stash. Remains to be seen if the plan will stick though!

  4. Well, three things I have learned. #1 I will not live long enough to use all my stash even if I gave half of it away, #2 I will not have everything on hand that I need for whatever new project I start and will have to buy something, and #3 as soon as I get rid of sommething I need it. I have been away from blog hopping (and blogging) for awhile. You have been creating some incredible beauty so I am going to do lots more browsing here and I need to check out some of these stash-busting links. I've missed a lot!

    1. That's one of the reasons I'm trying so hard to downsize some of my 'stuff' - because I know I could never live long enough to use it all. As for the getting rid of/immediately needing issue, I have come to the realization that if/when that does happen I will simply be forced to purchase whatever the missing 'it' is. And having a self-imposed desire to use what I have on hand has made me incredibly creative at times. Not having a good fabric shop anywhere close helps with my resolve too!

    1. One of the not so well known facts about me is that I am a compulsive reader of organizational books - not that much of what they suggest has actually sunk in and been acted upon!! The latest book I read just before Christmas suggested that each 'family' of things in your house should have an area (or better yet a container) set aside for it. The minute you have something that won't fit in that allotted spot it means you have to cull something in order to make it fit. Pretty simple concept and it seems to be working for me. Case in point - an overflowing Rubbermaid tote filled with lace bits. The lid hasn't fit down on the thing for probably years. So, I dumped it out and sorted through and eureeka the lid now works (who knew?!). There were pieces of lace in there that I knew I would never use but kept because they were 'too good' to get rid of. They're gone, gone, gone and I feel great about it too! Now if I am given any more lace I know that I have to decide what I want to keep and then cull my collection so it fits in my available space.

  7. I gave my sister some of my batiks for her birthday in December and more for Christmas. Joan lives in Tennessee so she took all her gifts with her when she visited this summer. It didn't make a dent in my fabric stash!! Thanks for the links - must make more time for the 'free sewing Pattern' link.

    1. I swear that stash expands when you're not looking. You remove some of it and the rest just puffs out and takes up all the space once again. Never ending battle it seems!

    1. Hah - and this is just a FRACTION of what I got rid of! How on earth one woman can accumulate so much in a small room is beyond comprehension. I swear it multiplies in the middle of the nights!

  9. Happy New Year!! Your barns of last year are stunning, my goodness such great work you did there! And good of you to go through your stash and actually do something with the things that were there already for years. We all have this stash and think we will do something with it sometime... Funny to read you reply on Sherry's comment. I love reading those organizational books too! One in particular has really helped me. So much so that I think I got rid of a bit too much, lol. Wishing you a creative but most of all very good 2019!

  10. Happy 2019 to you too Wen! I actually made some things with my outgoing stash - just because I felt too guilty about getting rid of it. I'm still working on a couple of other projects to use up more. I'm destashing....and sewing....destashing....and sewing....rinse and repeat!!

  11. I've come to the conclusion that the weight of my organized stash compresses more than can be seen by my eyes....when the viewable lot is removed the unseen lot explodes. I hope make more usable items from the stash this year.

Love your wonderful 2018 output, especially the barns and hope 2019 is every bit as pleasing for you. Thanks for the links.

    1. Aha! At LAST - a scientific explanation! Thank you for that. I've puzzled and puzzled about the expansion issue and you've solved the entire thing.

    1. You're right - the two sports-themed ones are heading for #1 grandson the next time we see him. The rest are in the linen drawer ready for us to use as we need them.
