Baby, it's cold outside! It was -19C when we went out for a few minutes this morning and they're saying the wind chill is making it closer to -30C. Supposed to be a big snow storm due to start mid to late afternoon, just to make it even more fun. So...because it's this cold....I've been working on some more mittens made from recycled sweaters...
Each pair of mittens required three different sweaters as well as a wide strip of ribbing for the cuffs, plus they're lined with either fleece or velour (thanks be to recycled housecoats!!). I can usually get three pairs of mittens from each sweater, depending on the size of the sweater and how I cut them. The hardest part is finding the wide ribbing for the cuffs. So...twelve pairs of warm mittens....done!
Great mittens. Sure beats knitting them. I like that these days. The bookshelf link is neat. I scrolled down through and looked at the Danish furniture. Love that style. Mini notions pouch is a neat idea.
ReplyDeleteThe sweater mittens are a lot warmer than the knitted version too (unless you make the thrummed ones). If I still had some clear vinyl I would happily make some of those pouches, but I flatly refuse to buy any just so I can make them.
DeleteNow, that's just a wee bit chilly for this girl who is experiencing a warm and sunny Summer's day today. I cannot begin to process those beyond freezing temperatures! But.....those fabulous mittens will keep freezing fingers warm and toasty. Love all the different colours and patterns. Such an excellent idea to recycle sweaters, housecoats and whatever you else you throw into the mix. Keep warm!
ReplyDeleteNo, I'm not the LEAST bit jealous of you!!! Argh!! Snowing here at the moment and windy so that means it's blowing it around too. Good thing I have lots of warm mittens close by!!
DeleteYour mittens are superb! What a great gesture. Do you give them away?
ReplyDeleteThank you! I gave a lot away at Christmas - pretty much everyone in the family got a pair. This lot I hope to sell.
DeleteI was going to make a pair of mittens once. I guess I got into sewing other things. What size are these?
ReplyDeleteThese fit a woman's hand and I also make them for men. Haven't tried to downsize the pattern into something for kids, but might toy with that one day.
DeleteBeautiful mittens Mary Anne. You're such a good example to us all..... recycling/upcycling all your old textiles. Brilliant! Christine xx
ReplyDeleteNot my own old textiles - purchased at the thrift shop. All my sweaters I wear so I'n not about to chop them up...lol.
DeleteYour mittens are great! I have seen them on fake for $40 for adult size. It’s cold here in New England hopefully the vortex isn’t headed this way!
ReplyDeleteThey are a tad fiddly to make but I think a $30-$40 price is a bit high. Who am I to say though, because I'm forever being accused of under-pricing my work. Bit warmer here today but I do hope you don't get the cold where you are!
DeleteI bought a pair of recycled-sweater mittens at a craft fair because they looked so warm, and they were...but they were also so thick I couldn't easily bend my fingers when wearing them...I think the maker got a little carried away with multiple layers. They would have been great for times when I don't need to use my hands, though! Yours certainly look cozy, and I expect they also bend :)
ReplyDeleteThese mittens do bend okay, but I really don't recommend them for driving because I think they might slip on the steering wheel. I suppose you could add a suede or leather palm but that would add to the layers and put up the cost too.
DeleteI was going to ask what you do with all those beautiful mittens, but then commonsense told me they are needed in -30C weather. Love they are upcycle from sweaters.
ReplyDeleteThese are the warmest mittens I've found. I have 'arthur' in my fingers so gloves just aren't warm enough, altho' I do use them for driving, rather than the mittens.
DeleteHi Maryanne wow your mittens are fantastic, what an awesome idea for recycling well done my friend you are so clever xx
ReplyDeleteNah - not clever...just cold!
DeleteI love your sweater mittens and I hope you and the Chef are wearing some to stave off your colder than freezing weather. Thank you for always including inspiring links. Warm Cozy Hugs...
ReplyDeleteResident Chef possesses (at least most of the time) an internal furnace and rarely wears anything on his hands. I, on the other hand (pun intended!), have poor circulation and my hands & feet are pretty much always cold when I'm out in the winter.
DeleteLove those mittens - but can't imagine them at the moment anywhere near me. We are having our own mini heatwave here after it blowing over the ditch from Australia. We are breaking records here for how hot it is!!!
ReplyDeleteWhat? You mean you don't wear mittens where you are?? I never would have known....hee hee. Wish we could trade off a little of our cold for a little of your heat!
DeleteYes, wonderful warm mittens!
ReplyDeleteThose temperatures are so cold, my daughter lives in the NE
and she is experiencing cold temperatures too.
She said to me, 'It's still winter here.'
And that notion bag is cute but way too small for my collection.
DH heard on the news yesterday that the cherry blossoms are out in Victoria (BC)....a month early!! That's just inconceivable.
DeleteMethinks the notion bag could be sized up??
I love your sweater mittens, Mary Anne. We were -9°F this morning and now I see it's warmed up to -2°. While that's crazy cold (here in central Indiana), it's supposed to warm up the 50's by Sunday. Crazy winter! But you know... we haven't had much snow or freezing rain here, so I'm not complaining.
ReplyDeleteI just checked and the current temp here is -15C, so it's warmed up considerably since yesterday. A lot of the roads are closed and they've even taken the plows off some south of here. Buses were cancelled because the side roads are drifted so badly. Glad we live in town and don't have too far to go. Definitely good weather for sweater mittens!
DeleteIm in!!!
ReplyDeletewhat are you going to do with all these mittens!
