Seeing green

As you can see from the photo, I've started adding the greens to the hexies.  There are a lot of them to add so it's going to take me a little while.  Currently the search is on for some wide-back fabric to use as the background and also as the backing for the quilt.  I want the quilt to end up being queen-sized hence the need for wide-back - otherwise I'd have to seam it and that's not an easy matter in my small sewing space.  It's going to be difficult enough appliqueing the hexies to it without having to handle it too much.

Sorry about the terrible picture
(yet another dull day here)
but you can get the general idea

- Thank you to Canadian Needle Nana for the head's up about THESE.  If you love cross stitching and love houses, it's a great place to visit!

- THIS is a little tip that you may not be aware of.

- Yikes!  Must admit my jaw dropped when I saw THIS!  Simply cannot imagine working that small.

- HERE is another of my 'awwwww' moments.

Today the quote is from Keanu Reeves..."None of us are getting out of here alive, so please stop treating yourself like an after-thought.  Eat the delicious food.  Walk in the sunshine.  Jump in the ocean.  Say the truth that you're carrying in your heart like hidden treasure.  Be silly.  Be kind.  Be weird.  There's no time for anything else"

  1. Good quote, easy to remember silly, kind and weird.
Would a queen sizr sheet work as a backing?

    1. I rather liked that part of the quote too.
I've thought about a queen size sheet but - and here's the thing - I want it to serve more as a bedspread than a quilt (if that makes any sense whatsoever!). Our bed, if I end up using it there, is up on blocks so we can store books under there (don't ask!!) and I need something that comes to the floor to cover the 'collection' beneath it. So, in that context, a queen (or even a king) sized sheet is too small. Trust me to make it difficult!!

    2. What about foot wide strips of fabric sewn to size? Straight seam sewing.

    3. Just the thought of trying to cut strips of any size in my tiny little space is more than daunting. At least if I order wide-back fabric someone else has to cut it!!

    4. I know Joann's use to have wide fabrics on rolls. Not sure what you have in Canada.

    5. I found a source in Canada that has what I think will work - just have to decide which one I want for the backing.

  2. When you are ready to applique the flower blocks to the backing you might look into some Mistyfuse fusible webbing. It's a super lightweight fusible and I use it a lot to "baste" appliques in place before stitching. I just tear it into small bits and place them around like pins. I don't fuse the whole piece. But I think it would be easier to keep the whole thing flat with fusing instead of pinning.

  3. Interesting tip about the fold marks. Yet another use for white vinegar.

    1. Vinegar is one of the most handy things to have on hand - so many great uses!

  4. I really like the green you're adding. Hope you find what you're looking for. That miniature hexie is mind-blowing. That really shows dedication to the project.

    1. I think green and purple goes together. The background (found one!) will be white and now I'm trying to decide what I'll do for the backing.

  5. The green really makes the purples pop. Pretty!

    1. I like the two colours together although the greens that I got in the package I won aren't 'traditional' greens so not sure how well they'll stand the test of time.

    1. I can't imagine it either - and it surprised me how many teeny little projects I saw when I started looking. Takes a whole lot more patience than I would ever have!!

  7. enJOY following your hexie project...of course! Meanwhile, I would have needed a magnifying glass to work on 'Dear Prudence' Hexagon Quilt. Gracious, half the size of a dime! That's amazing! Thanks for sharing your find.

    1. Magnifying glass for sure! It's hard enough doing 2" hexies much less anything that small!!!

Sherry of createology: I love your hexies with the greens added. They look like flowers with leaves. Have you thought of using a queen or king size sheet for the backing fabric? And a blanket or mattress pad for in between? Sometimes these can be found in good or new condition at thrift stores. I like this quote!

    1. I want the quilt to cover our bed and drop to the floor which is a problem because our bed it up on blocks so we have storage beneath. A regular sized queen sheet isn't big enough, sadly. Trust me to make it difficult for myself!

    1. I like purple but would have been happier had they been blue, but it's what I won so I'm using it.
