A Saga, In Several Parts

Saturday we canned spaghetti sauce and made a second batch of tomato jam.  Took most of the day.  Of course then I came up with a brilliant idea (first mistake!!) and suggested to Resident Chef that maybe we should consider buying a small bar-sized fridge to use as a cold cellar.  That led to deciding to get rid of our water cooler which we haven't been using since Covid hit - we've gone to a Brita instead (and b'sides the jugs of water are getting too heavy for the Resident Chef to handle).  Removing said water cooler would create space for a small fridge.  Rather clever thought?  Canadian Tire just happened to have a fridge on sale so out we went and came home with one.  So far so good.  Except....it was exactly one half inch (!!!!!!!!) too wide to fit through the storage room to where we needed to put it.  THAT meant we had to move the huge shelving unit (and everything on and beneath it!) out of there and into my sewing room.

Hard to fathom the size of the shelving unit from the awkward angle of the photo but you can get the general idea I'm sure!

Did that, put everything back,  only to discover that the fridge freezer wasn't set properly (looks like it had been jarred in transit somewhere and came loose).  Of course THAT particular issue wasn't discovered until AFTER we'd moved the storage unit back and reloaded it.  Resident Chef wrestled with it and managed to clip the freezer back into place and....fingers crossed.....it seems to be working okay.  The thought of having to move all that stuff again was more than I could bear last night.  Ah, the life here at Chez Magpie!

Oh, and speaking of wrestling - the new mattress arrived.  Another huge box to deal with.  So hard to believe that a box that looks like this...

....turns into a full-sized, very thick, queen-sized mattress in a matter of minutes.  Of course my diabolical mind got to wondering what would happen if one of these boxes 'sprung an air leak' in the delivery truck and exploded all over the place.  Could be the stuff of comic strips.

Now....the old mattress.....that's a whole 'nother issue!  More wrestling, heaving and 'glowing' (my mother, bless her, always insisted that women don't 'sweat', they glow....so I surely had a glow on!) and the oldie is currently resting comfortably leaning up against the living room couch awaiting final resting place with the mattress recyclers.  In lieu of flowers, please donate to a charity of your choice.

The next chapter in the ongoing saga that is my life will involve hauling said sadly-departed mattress down six flights of stairs to await the mattress hearse recycling garbage truck.

Our area has a recycling program for mattresses and so I thought I'd give you a quote today that reflects that.  Couldn't find one that quite suited, but I did find this instead and thought it might be a good one to share...

  1. Yikes--what a bear of a day wrestling that stuff in and out!! You deserve a good resting day after that...

    1. Ah, yes - and now Resident Chef has decided that the new little fridge should be up on something so it's easier to get things in and out....so guess what? That dratted storage unit will have to move AGAIN.

  2. Sounds like the circus of events that usually happen here when someone has a good idea. I never thought about using a smaller fridge for a cold cellar - we gave my daughter's dorm fridge away years ago. But I guess now would be a good time to look for one. We want to switch out our refrigerator with the freezer on top to one on the bottom because of my back and they're on backorder for 4-6 months. Luckily, it's not an emergency situation. I never knew there was so much to recycle in a mattress.

    1. Here, we call this type of debacle the 'galloping ick' - one thing leads to several others in a chain reaction format. You will love the fridge with a freezer on the bottom. We're dreading the day when ours gives up the ghost and we're forced to either cough up the big bucks for a new one or take the 'freebie' that they issue in the apartment buildings. Suspect we'll go the 'freebie' route but man are we going to miss the freezer on the bottom!

  3. Happy New Freezer!
Your ordeal means you are due an extra treat or two, be good to yourselves.
Ok, the bird eating tarantula was a surprise. :)

    1. It's a fridge actually, with a small freezer unit that's about big enough to hold a couple of trays of ice cubes. And....don't say I didn't warn you about that spider!!

  4. Isn't that always the way with a "simple" project? I've been meaning to email you to tell you that I took the Carrie Penny shawl and instead of starting with the magic ring (or whatever), I started with a chain of 40 to create a neckline similar to the shawl in the link you sent me. I like the 8 wedgess of the Penny shawl better than the 4 wedges of the other one. The neckline worked great but next time I'll probably make it a little bigger and probably start with a row of HDC before I start sectioning off into the wedges.

    1. Simple projects don't ever seem to happen around here! Glad you used the shawl design and came up with something you like.

  5. It sounds like you’ve had a weekend like we have had! I’ve been putting up tomato sauce and cleaning carpets (after assembling a new carpet cleaning machine). Contractor is working downstairs finishing up wall and window, Bruce installed new toilet seats (unglamorous, but a fresh change). Today I get to decorate for fall while we wait for another contractor to bid re-stretching the new carpet torn up in the basement flood. Calgon, take me away!

  6. Maybe you should take a break from having great ideas. At least till you've recovered from the current one.

    1. Yes, I think I've had quite enough great ideas because they're bound to get me into trouble!

  7. What a weekend you've had! I'm glad the fridge is working now, and that you've got a new mattress for all your troubles. That mattress recycling infographic is really interesting. I had no idea how recyclable mattresses are. And that turantula is terrific. I hate spiders, but I had to look after you so emphatically warned me off. ;^)

    1. Well, don't say I didn't warn you about that spider! As for the latest in the saga of the old mattress - it's going over the balcony once we know when the recyclers are coming. I have flatly refused to even attempt to haul it down six flights of stairs.

  8. Oh Blimey! What a weekend you both had. The day worked well for the canning but the lightbulb idea was, perhaps, not the way to go. Indeed lots of hard work to get things sorted ...I truly apologise for cracking up, with a smile stuck to my face :-)) due to the once again fridge move. I have used the Mattress quote several times with success. Though Well Warned, I did peek at the first pic of the spider and my hair is still standing upright. May the rest of the week be calm and very pleasing for you.

    1. Well, it can never be said that things don't get interesting here at Chez Magpie. And yes, I did warn you about that spider....so sorry about your hair.

  9. I am still laughing (with you) and your refrigerator-storage unit moving fiasco....yes, that sounds exactly like the stuff that happens around here! Nothing ever seems to go according to my great "plan".....but I am so glad to hear that everything seemed to end up good after all the heaving and ho-ing. I am trying to clean out my sewing room right now and running into just that kind of eye-rolling activities!

    1. There's another episode of 'the grand move' coming after Resident Chef decided there needs to be something beneath the new fridge to bring it up to a level easier to get in and out of. Of course the 'remedy' for that is going to involve moving that blankety-blank shelving unit AGAIN!!!

  10. Confession time - I looked too, and was alright until the words bird eating spider, that gave me the hebegebees! What a palaver I'm glad you got everything sorted in the end regarding the new fridge.
    Have a great week

    1. Well, you can't say I didn't warn you! I would never, in a million years, make one of those things even though I don't have a thing about spiders. Have to admire the mind of the person that did however.

  12. Oh Dear my friend. This could so easily be my life. We have definitely wrestled with the exploding mattresses. Both receiving them and returning them. Yikes! You and Resident Chef are amazing in all you accomplish. I feel September is moving forward on super turbo speed. I am barely keeping up day to day.

  13. I think I can certainly empathise with all the wrestling, heaving and glowing after our house move! Still more boxes to arrive this coming week so it will all start again! Hope your fridge proves to be very useful and that the new mattress is lovely and comfy! Christine xx
