19, 20 and kitchen stuff

First of all, there was a little bit of 'bubble, bubble, toil and trouble' going on in the kitchen here at Chez Magpie and this is what came forth.......

Tomato Jam!
From the recipe HERE
(thank you Liz!)

We used the second recipe Liz posted and ended up with six half-pint jars.  A note I would make on this is to not only thinly slice the lemons but also chop them up somewhat, otherwise you end up with long pieces of lemon rind in the jam.  No difference to the taste, but for 'viewing' it might look a little nicer.  And...another note....we found it takes about twice as many tomatoes to end up with the required amount to make the recipe.  This is a keeper recipe!  We will, I think, make more for tucking in with a few Christmas gifts.

Two more little stitcheries are being added to the pile...a wreath and the cookies.  The cookies were more or less my own design.

These two may change somewhat yet - I might add some holly to the cookie one and I'm not overly thrilled with the bow on the wreath so I'm toying with adding a ribbon bow.

Today's quote is from Paulo Coetho...."The world is changed by your example, not by your opinion"

  1. I think a bow on the wreath will add a nice touch. I will miss seeing the little crossticthery when they're finished.

    1. There's a cross stitched bow on the wreath but it doesn't show up enough. Once I've blocked it, I'll be adding a ribbon bow.

  2. I think a ribbon bow on the wreath would make the design. Never made tomato jam but that looks very interesting and since we have an abundance of tomatoes....

    God bless.

    1. The ribbon bow is going to happen. If you like jam, I think you'll be surprised at just how good this is. Nobody would ever know it was made with tomatoes!

  3. I am sure your quilting skills are up to Elizabeth Hartman designs. Her patterns use squares and rectangles, not triangles. Accurate cutting, an accurate seam allowance , organization and patience are all you need to succeed. I made my granddaughter T the unicorn quilt and she loves it.

    1. I must admit I didn't study the pattern enough to recognize the shapes for what they are. They certainly LOOK like a lot of triangles and that scared me off. Thank you for your encouragement Sarah - I might just succumb. I have 2 grandsons that I'm sure would love it (actually 3 'grands' but the older one is, I think, out of the dinosaur phase). Thanks for the comment!

  5. I don't think I've ever tried tomato jam. Sounds interesting. Our tomatoes didn't do well this summer. Have had to buy them from a farm stand, but we're certainly enjoying BLT's as long as we can.

    1. You'd never know the jam was made from tomatoes....so good. We had to buy our tomatoes too (no garden in an apartment, sadly)

  6. I'm not a big jam (or marmalade) person, but you remind me I missed sampling some Tomato Marmalade friends sent home with us when we visited them a couple of weeks ago. It was a tiny jar, and hubs finished it off so quick I really didn't have a chance. I think he thought of it as his, since I came home with a big jar of dill pickles (which he'd not touch with a 10 foot pole). :)

    1. I'm not huge on jam either, although I do like freezer strawberry jam. I will make an exception for this jam though - it's really good. I like dills but I mostly leave them for DH because he loves them way more than I do.

  7. Pretty wreath. This Advent Calendar is going to be so pretty. Mary Anne, the dinosaur pattern of Elizabeth Harman is fabulous; I can see you stitching this. Your grandsons would love it.....but then, you would have to make two.

    1. I must admit it's fun to be working in girlie colours for a change...seems almost foreign to my nature after so many years of having boys in the family. I do like that dino quilt but you're right in that I'd have to make two (at least!).

  9. Your tomato jam looks delicious Mary Anne and the stitcheries are looking great too! Like the idea of a ribbon bow on the wreath. Hugs Christine xx

    1. I'm not normally a fan of sweet things (unless it involves dark chocolate!) but I have to admit I do love this jam.
