A wee bit of change - and something wonderful

I've done a little of the detailing on the latest barn as you can see from this photo (if you want to scroll down to my previous post, perhaps you can see just how much as been changed)....

Yesterday I had coffee with one of my friends and shared my tale of woe over my sewing machine issues and she remembered that she had a machine that she never uses (she much prefers handing her sewing needs over to me because she's pretty hopeless when it comes to any sort of machines).  She offered to let me try her machine and, if it worked, we could discuss a price).  Of course it was in the case when she gave it to me so I wasn't sure what was inside but when I picked it up my heart did a little flip because I thought that maybe.....just maybe....it might be a Singer Featherweight.  And it was!!  And even better?  It works!  She hadn't used it for a number of years and I knew it likely needed oiling and luckily I have some.  Of course it won't do anything but straight stitch (no zig zag or free motion capabilities) but it sews!

See how beautiful she is???.....

An internet search with the model number
yielded the information that this little
beauty was made in December of 1951.

Another anonymous quote for you today..."Ability is what you're capable of doing,  motivation determines what you do, and attitude determines how well you do it"

  2. Huzzah!! My sewing machine is a Featherweight inherited from the original owner, my Auntie Ruby. We are now Sewing Sisters! Except only one of us is actually sewing. But that will change if/when I get my house put to rights and have some room to spread out :)

  3. What a magnificent looking machine and what a great friend. You will be able to do free-motion with that one! Barn is coming along nicely. Thanks for links. The artist with the trees is great. I do similar with some of my trees.

  5. I also acquired my featherweight from a friend. She moved to a new house in a new city and broke her leg and every single thing was in boxes. I flew to help her unpack and we came across a featherweight she had bought some 30 years before and had never even threaded it. She gave me the machine and it has had a prominent place in my living room ever since and even though I have 4 other machines it is the featherweight I use. It has best and tightest stitch of all....I love mine and you will love yours also....

  8. I had to think about that quote for a moment. What a great sewing machine find!! When you said Featherweight, it brought a memory of MY first sewing machine, but a 1966 model. I worked for a Singer store in the early 70s too selling machines. I LOVED that job!

  13. Hi MA! I'm loving the direction of your barn! It has changed a great deal since the last time I stopped in. Your featherweight made my heart jump. That is exactly like my mom's old machine, the one I learned to sew on. I don't know the model number but the 1951 would be right in the time that she probably got it. The first thing I made on it was a beach towel...lime green and royal blue swirly patterned terry cloth. I sewed the hems and the end. LOL Enjoy the lovely little machine!
