I mustered my courage and attempted to sew a little dress for our grandie. I was reminded quite thoroughly that I am NOT cut out for sewing clothing when I was feeling quite smug about my progress only to realize that I'd made the opening for the back on the shoulder instead. AND, to add insult to injury I completely overlooked the pattern where it very clearly said you should cut the front bodice on a fold and I cut it in two pieces (and then wondered why the facing pieces didn't fit...duh. Good thing I'm such good friends with my frogging tool. Luckily (?) I had to order additional fabric to do the skirt and there's enough that I can re-do the pieces I messed up. I'm also pretty sure it's quite a bit too big for her, despite using the 'proper' size on the pattern. Oh well. She'll grow - maybe it will fit her NEXT year. Now you know why I don't sew clothing!!!💣💥💩😒
Here's the pieces put together correctly (I hope!) waiting for the
skirt to be sewn on.
Pattern I used is Simplicity CS9280.
- THIS would be such fun to make and gift to someone - it could be filled with anything you like.

Today's quote...

That's funny about the dress caper. Well you didn't sew the sleeves together, so you're ahead there. A lot of people do that then search everywhere for "the other sleeve parts".
ReplyDeleteI haven't done the sleeve thing - yet.
DeleteThat is SO much something I would do! Except I wouldn't have the extra fabric for a second go, and the whole thing would end up at the bottom of my sewing basket. So I'd call that a success for you :)
ReplyDeleteWell, I had already screwed up by not ordering enough fabric in the first place so it was happenstance that I had to order enough that I ended up having enough to re-do the top of the dress. I really don't know why I keep thinking I can manage to sew clothes!
DeleteI haven't sewed clothing since my daughter grew up--it is certainly not easy if you've not done it in a while...when I was a teen my Mom sent me and my cousin to a local fabric shop to take lessons on how to cut patterns, etc...
ReplyDeleteI wouldn't know how to begin these days...good that you were able to "fix" it;)))))...pretty pattern...hugs, Julierose
You were lucky to get lessons - anything I do has to be figured out as I go along. I used to make recycled denim jackets but those were pretty easy (especially after I did about 50 of them) but dresses are a whole 'nother challenge.
DeleteThe dress is cute.
ReplyDeleteSorry to laugh about your dilemma. Been there. It also brings back a fun memory. Technical writing term paper, I wrote about a sewing pattern because it has the directions I need to read the most. 🤣
May
I wonder what your mark on the term paper ended up being....
DeleteAs I recall, the professor gave me a B+ or A-. I wasn’t pleased. He explained where I missed the higher mark. I had to agree. It didn’t stop my pouting. 😎
DeleteI still have the (1991?) term paper. It’s around here someplace. I think it was a B+. Professor explained where I missed the higher grade. I had to agree. It didn’t stop me from pouting. He was an excellent teacher. Grades from him were jewels.
DeleteA B+ isn't a bad grade!
DeleteThe cartoon made me laugh! LOL! I love your fabric and pattern!
ReplyDeleteThe cartoon made me chuckle too - sadly we all know at least one person who is attached to their cell phone to the exclusion of all else.
Deletesigh ... i used to sew all of my clothes and my kids' clothes and my father-in-law's tab-fronted shirts and ...... anywho, jimmie jams (bottoms only) are about all i'm capable of anymore, and no one seems to care (including me) - so, good for you, sticking with it!!!
ReplyDeleteI somehow don't equate making PJ's with 'clothing' sewing (I know - my brain works in quite mysterious ways!). Tab-fronted shirts - wow. I can't imagine.
DeleteI usually have lots of trouble putting in sleeves. I don't know how many times I have had to use the seam ripper to remove them.
ReplyDeleteLove the cartoon.
God bless.
Luckily this pattern doesn't have sleeves per se so I didn't have to worry about trying to fit them in. I can't imagine how hard that would be.
DeleteI think that making little kids clothes (and doll clothes) is very hard. I'm afraid I'll be making American Girl clothes soon for my Grand Niece.
ReplyDeleteI doubt there will be any American Girl doll clothing in my future because our daughter-in-love is freaked out by dolls with 'real-looking' eyes. Rag dolls are okay luckily, but I wonder if she'll be able to keep Barbies out of the house. I know I won't be sewing clothes for them either (although I don't mind crocheting them).
DeleteLOL! Sometimes sewing by rote works....and sometimes it doesn't.
ReplyDeleteI doubt I could ever sew any type of clothing by rote and always have to read the directions. Obviously I didn't read them well enough!
DeleteOh that will be sew cute when it's done! I've only sewn a few skirts and blouses. Not my thing. I prefer stitching and sewing that stuff together.
ReplyDeleteClothes aren't my thing either, but when it comes to little things I do try.
DeleteThe dress will be so cute when it's done. I did one year dressmaking at school, and my late Mom taught me a lot. Still I did mistakes, because I hate reading through any patterns! lol I don't make clothes anymore. Glad you got more of the same fabric.
ReplyDeleteI've never had any training in sewing and what I've learned has been self-taught. Quite truthfully sewing clothing scares me!
DeleteYou are a wonderful grandma, to make your granddaughter such a cute dress. :)
ReplyDeleteShe's the first girl in the family for a long time so I can't resist doing 'girlie' things for her.
