Needing advice

I have always found blog readers to be a fountain of information, so I'm going to throw this question out there and hope someone will know the answer (or can send me to the right place).  I would like to make some baby bibs that simply pull over the head with knitted ribbing around the neck, rather than ties or snaps.  I found one at a craft show a year ago and gifted it to our niece and she says it's the best bib ever.   Of course now I can't remember where exactly I got it, nor can I find the pattern.

I can come up with a pattern (there are lots of free ones on the internet) but my problem is two-fold....

1) sourcing the ribbing for the neck - in Canada if at all possible.  Postage rates everywhere else are out of this world so I'd like to find something here.

2) knowing how big to make the neck in order to fit over baby's head.

Any thoughts?  Thanks, in advance!

Today the quote is from an unknown source (and I thought it might be fitting since I am currently playing semi-nursemaid to my hubby who had knee surgery today)..... " A man too busy to take care of his health is like a mechanic too busy to take care of his tools "

  1. in case you haven't checked Ravelry, you might find some instructions there. as far as ribbing, you could use the ribbing off a t-shirt if you can't find ribbing in the fabric stores. the ribbing on a babies t-shirt would probably be the perfect size for the bib.

  2. Gosh, I've seen a lot of these at craft shows too. I don't know the answers to your questions. I sure hope someone has your answer.

My baby came yesterday. Thank you so much. She is sweet and happily settling in her new space on the shelf above my computer. Thank you so much!

  3. Ribbing - Fabricland and try Len's Mills.
Size? I would say try to see if you can find a pattern that has a t-shirt for little ones and go from there.

  4. Can you borrow it back and reverse engineer it? and I don't follow why you have to source the ribbing? not knit it, as part of the pattern?

  6. The only kind of ribbing that I've seen that you can buy retail is the replacement cuffs for ski jackets:)I think I saw it at Fabricland? If I see any other type in my travels I'll let you know.

There is an Etsy company that is in Stoney Creek called The Sewing Network. I was looking for an open ended coat zipper in an non standard size. Looked everywhere. Couldn't find one. They didn't have any open ended zippers listed but when I asked them they had one for me right away. The service was fabulous. There is no harm in asking them if they sell ribbing.

  8. I can remember my daughter had a bib that was made from a small hand towel with ribbing around the neck. As I remember....here was how it was made: Fold the towel into 1/3s the neck opening is cut on the 1st fold so there is a little towel in the back, but most is in the front. I have some measurements for babies head circumferences. I will find the link and comment again.
The ribbing at the neck was about 1" so I would think the ribbing must have been about 2 3/4" to 3" wide.
