Two more done

I've finished two more of the ornament series (or at least they're finished as far as I can go for the moment)....

The search is on for either a frying pan or a rolling pin to add to each one to complete them.  The original design called for a flour sack but being that neither recipient is a baker I thought a frying pan would be a better choice.  If you want to see the original design, go HERE.

And....Resident Chef harvested the remainder of our little balcony garden and we had enough green tomatoes to make these...

For those of you who have green tomatoes you're wondering about, perhaps this recipe might appeal...

DISCLAIMER!!!!
It seems that green tomatoes are slightly poisonous!
Who knew?
According to my research, they only bother those who have a sensitivity (much, I suppose, like those having an allergy to certain foods).
You might want to read THIS article for
further information!

GREEN TOMATO RELISH

7 lbs. green tomatoes, cored & cut into ¼’s
4 large yellow onions, wedged
2 large red onions, wedged
3 large green peppers, wedged
2 large red peppers *
4 tsp. pickling salt
5 c. apple cider vinegar
4 c. sugar
2 Tablespoons celery seed
4 tsp. mustard seed
In a food processor, chop veg’s.  Combine &
add salt.  Place in large strainer and drain for
3 hours.  Pour drained veg’s into large pot &
add remaining ingredients.  Bring to boil, reduce
heat to a moderate simmer & cook uncovered 30
mins, stirring frequently.  Ladle into hot jars, seal,
& process in a boiling water bath for 15 mins.
  * chop the red peppers finer than the rest

  1. You're really going all out on the ornaments! Keepers. I like how carefully you make them fit the people.

    1. If you happen to go and look at the designer's patterns on Etsy there are lots to choose from to suit pretty much any interest. Today I'll be working on putting the houses together and have to re-size the roof pattern to 'fit' the gauge of aida cloth I used.

    1. They didn't look finished without the hats even though I know most chefs now don't bother with them.

  5. I'd probably use that relish on pinto beans. How do you all plan to use it?

Once again you have created Cross-stitch masterpieces. They are fabulous! The hats are adorable. I haven't seen green tomatoes in shops for over 50 years. They were supposed to be poisonous to humans. I made green tomato jam for some years prior to this.

    1. I've never heard of green tomatoes being poisonous - eaten them for years and haven't died yet! I just did a google search and it turns out you're quite right, but only to people who are sensitive to them. It's like eating any food that you could be allergic to I guess.

  9. Well done on getting the Chefs finished! I had know idea that green tomatoes were slightly poisonous although I did know green potatoes are so perhaps it's something to do with photosynthesis? Christine xx

    1. I knew about green potatoes but hadn't heard about tomatoes. I suspect the levels of 'danger' in green tomatoes would be dependent upon how much you ate, or if you happened to have an allergy to whatever the aspect of them is poisonous. I suspect it's like being allergic to any other food. I guess we won't be giving any away at Christmas as we had planned, just in case.

I can't say I've ever had green tomato relish and our small batch of tomatoes this year was slim.
