Three little kittens HAVEN'T lost their mittens!

...but they very well might once they start wearing them after Christmas!  These were completed over the weekend and will adorn three little grandsons after they do their time in the Christmas box...

The pattern for all the mittens, both adult and children's, came from the Patons 'Next Steps Seven - Mittens and Gloves' booklet and the yarn (from my stash mostly) is Canadiana also by Patons.

Today is another quote from Maya Angelou..."If you must look back, do so forgivingly.  If you must look forward, do so prayerfully.  However, the wisest thing you can do is be present in the present - gratefully"

  1. Lucky warm kittens. Dont know Harry, but back in the 80s when I bought my serger, I bought 3 child sweaters from second hand store by bag full. Cut up, sewed back together as yardage with serger because it could. USed pattern to cut my size. I still have that red, yellow, navy blue sweater that grew larger over years. Guess I should dig it out?

  3. I would love to be able to knit mittens and socks. They do make the best gifts. I liked your comment over on my blog about missing those "loose flowy dresses," of summer. Funny because I have really gotten back into wearing dresses and actually wish I could wear them all the time, winter and summer.

    1. It's hard to tell the right sizing for little kids but hopefully I've done okay. I'm sure I'll hear if they don't fit! About wearing dresses - my mother never ever wore pants and always wore a dress year round. She would add a pair of short 'longjohns' in the winter time. She always wore nylons too - with a garter belt. She'd take my old pantyhose and cut off the pantie part and use them. You mentioning wearing a dress in the winter made me think of that!

  4. Do you ever sleep MA? Three pair of gloves over the weekend and no doubt you'll have made other things as well. The boys will love them. Love the patchwork jacket.

    1. I sleep when I can - too many nights I'm awake, but that's not because I'm working on anything. I finished the mittens on the weekend but I'd been knitting on them for a couple of weeks beforehand, so I'm not that much of a wonder woman!

    1. I've actually been working on the mittens for at least two weeks so not as fast as you think. I wish I could have learned to knit from my MIL - she was really fast and how I would love to know her technique now.

  6. It would be so fun to watch your grandkids open all of your hand-made gifts. I love your stripey mittens. :)

    1. I have to subject them to my handmade 'stuff' now while they're still too young to like it. I expect the day will come when handmade will be something they wouldn't be caught wearing anywhere. And then they'll get older yet and like it again. It's the way of life.

    1. Even if they're not thrilled, at least they might help keep them warm!

  8. I remember attaching those strings to mittens to slide through the coat sleeves, so that my son wouldn't lose them. Before he got too old to accept mittens at all!

    1. They don't want strings now - apparently they're a choking hazard. They have short little 'clippy' things that attach to the coat and to the mitten that seem to be okay.

  11. One thing I won't miss, living here in CA, is the need to bundle up for the winter. But I think my boys MIGHT need mittens. They make great gifts and your grands are lucky to get them made especially for them. Thanks for some great links! I am seeing a lot of talk about rag quilts on FB.

    1. It snowed pretty much all day yesterday here - I'm NOT ready! Mind you, I'm never ready. And yes, I'm seeing a lot of rag quilts on the internet these days - obviously they're enjoying a resurgence.

  12. Those are adorable. All in one weekend? I am such a novice knitter, I am still on my first pair of socks and almost to the very scary heel :-) I have only the internet as my teacher so it's slow going. Will look at the sock patterns- thanks!

    1. Oh no - they weren't all done in one weekend. I'm not that fast!!! As for socks and heels if you run into any problems let me know and I'll send you the link the pattern I use. It's the easiest one I've found. I'm self-taught too via books and the internet. How I wish my MIL was still alive because by all reports she was a very fast knitter and I would love to get some tips from her.

Thank you so much for leaving comments! I appreciate you taking the time out of your busy life to talk to me. It's wonderful to know that someone is actually reading my mumblings and even more fun if I can connect with you and visit your blog.
