From our kitchen

Applesauce!

We bought apples at the market and they were 'mushy', not crisp like we prefer....so.....applesauce happened, mainly because there's currently no freezer space available.  The original recipe we used came from HERE.  We made a few modifications though - we don't like using too much sugar in things so we lowered it to just a scant 1/2 cup and added 1/2 tsp. of cinnamon.  Good idea to taste test before jarring to be sure the sugar and spice is to your liking.  Closer to Christmas we might make some more to include with our gifts.

Today's quote..."If you can't think of a word say, 'I forget the English word for it.'  That way people will think you're bilingual instead of an idiot"  Personally I would replace 'idiot' with menopausal!

  2. I agree that so many recipes just have too much sugar. what a cute Idea for the pumpkin stems.....buttons are one thing I have plenty of........and speaking of plenty........I need to do some downsizing in several areas, as well. It seems that at one point in our lives we don't have enough of anything so we begin to collect things and then when we turn around suddenly those things are beginning to infringe on us.........I think menopausal is a better word than idiot too....

    1. Oh yes I know all about the collecting of 'things' and then coming to the realization that suddenly I'm snowed under. It happened with teddy bears. I wanted just one that I fell in love with but someone saw it and thought I was a collector and I ended up with well over a hundred of them by the time we moved into this apartment. I kept 3 (including the original one) and let the rest bless someone else.

    1. Applesauce is pretty easy to make and pretty much everyone likes it so it's gift-worthy at least in my mind.

  5. How sweet of you to link to my post. As I started reading the explanation of the link my first thought was "Wow, someone else made pumpkins with button stems!" And then I read on. lol Your applesauce sounds yummy. I'm not a sweet applesauce eater either.

    1. Hah - gotcha!
The applesauce IS good but it certainly doesn't need the amount of sugar that the recipe suggested. We often eat it with pork so don't want it too sweet.

  6. Great quote!! We love applesauce and buy so much of it. Perhaps we will can next year. Alyssa will have to lead the way because I am getting used to taking no responsibility here except dishes and laundry. We'll get a dishwasher with the kitchen remodel so check THAT off the list, lol. I'm going to check out that downsizing inspiration. I think now that we are settled in I need to do a bit of that!

    1. The applesauce happened because there's no room in the freezer to put anything more at the moment so it was a case of desperation to find a use for apples we knew we wouldn't eat out of hand. Now we're in quest of a larger quantity of apples so we can make enough for including in Christmas parcels.

  7. I was gifted with a bottle of applesauce yesterday from my son-in-law. Yours looks good too!! Thanks for adding my link for those autumn quilts to yours. They are quite nice. I do like that crochet owl cushion (not for me).

    1. Certainly is the season for making applesauce. I love how it smells whilst it's cooking too. We didn't make ours overly sweet so we can serve it with pork if we choose to.

  8. I've never tried making applesauce but there was a teacher who brought me some every fall and I miss that. Maybe I'll have to give it a try. And I just had to write that quote down - if I write it down, I might remember it better.

    1. Applesauce is incredibly easy to make and I like that you can control the amount of sugar you add. The lemon juice needs to be as the recipe suggests though or it might spoil.
