This is the view from our balcony towards the river that runs through the town. That big tree to the right is just outside our bedroom window and you can see the pathway that runs along the river all the way to the downtown. Our thoughts are with all the brave fire fighters who are battling in this extreme heat under very trying conditions.

holding the people fighting your fires and ours in the Light - we've lost three firefighters and a pilot in colorado already this season - it's a waking nightmare, innit?
ReplyDeleteIt certainly is - we are so grateful to live where there are no massive forests closeby, but that's not to say grass fires aren't a huge thing here. We worry about our #2 son and his family in BC because their house backs onto a huge forest that stretches for miles. All we can do is pray for them and for the brave fire fighters who are risking their lives every day,.
DeleteThe fires are frightening. We have unhealthy air all the way south in NJ.. It's amazing how far the smoke and smell travel. Hoping you get a break soon.
ReplyDeleteI feel so badly for the fire fighters - it must be sheer hell to work in those conditions and then there's feeling sorry for those who have lost everything - to say nothing about the animals that have lost their lives. As of this moment, they're fighting what seems to be a losing battle. We pray for lots of rain (but NO lightning!).

Being outdoors is certainly not happening for us at the moment. Wait all year for summer and then we can't go out and enjoy any of it.
DeleteHere in southeastern Saskatchewan we are getting smoke from the fires in Montana and there is one not too far from us in North Dakota. While we are not in as bad a pollution problem as some right now, as the winds continue we will soon be getting the smoke from Wyoming, and Colorado. My heart goes out to the Canadian helicopter pilot that was killed fighting the fires in Colorado. I am not sure how many more we will lose this season.

and yet - the US is blaming Canadians for the wildfire smoke when they have fires burning too. And yes, prayers for the family of that pilot and for those who are on the front lines.

ReplyDeleteYes, the air is certainly not great here at the moment, but it's far worse in areas closer to the fires. We don't live near any hugely forested areas so that helps.
DeleteIt's still pretty grim here in terms of smoke, but I'm grateful it's not local fires. The danger of fire is one of the reasons I get so annoyed about irresponsible eejits using illegal fireworks around here. I think the last time a really big fire swept through my town was in the 50s, and it was only stopped when it reached a wetland.
ReplyDeleteAnd on a lighter note, re: selvages, do you remember the woman who made a gorgeous dress entirely out of selvages? It was some years ago now, but I was thinking about it just the other day!
I'm grateful we don't have local fires either, although there was a big grass fire just outside of town last week. Our town passed a by-law a couple years ago banning fireworks other than the ones put off at the athletic field on July 1st. That doesn't stop idiotic boaters from tying up just across from us and setting them off on the weekends. Hopefully the rain we're getting today will help dampen the fires but it won't help what's continuing to burn underground. They're calling for the possibility of thunderstorms later on and then we have to worry about lightning starting more fires.

DeleteI hope your air has cleared up. I remember that last year when we went to Maine we had smoke from your wildfires for about a week. We even had some here in Virginia last week.
ReplyDeleteWe can't control the prevailing winds, much as we might want to. For now, they're not blowing our way so we're good.
