Silly Grandma!

What's a grandmother to do?  Especially when she comes across a really cute pattern?  Or when there's a special request from her grandson's daddy?

Yesterday I played with toys.  First of all I finished working on a wee monkey....this one....

Our littlest grandson loves the first one I made him and carries it around and sleeps with it.  There have been a couple of close calls when his monkey went awol, but luckily he was found.  Our son thought it might be a plan if there was a replacement in the wings, just in case.  I didn't have the heart to tell him that a new monkey wouldn't be as well loved as the old!

Pattern is found HERE.

And, I made him this, just because I wanted to!

Grandma has a resident dragon in her sewing room that oversees all she does, so our little guy needs one too.  See?  I can justify anything when it comes to grandkids!!!  Pattern for the dragon can be found HERE.

  1. Oh my gosh - I LOVE that little monkey! And that dragon - wow, such detail. No grandkids here yet BUT I'm sure if/when they do come along, I'll be spoiling them too!

    1. I love the monkey too, and it's even more fun that he was born in the Year of the Monkey (he's part Taiwanese). Spoiling grandkids is what we do, even though this little guy lives clear across the country.

  2. Great work! An extra stand by cuddly will save a lot of parents time in searching.

    1. I'm pretty sure, from experience, that a new monkey will not be THE monkey and only THE monkey will do. We'll see!

  3. The monkey is really cute and the dragon fantastic too. I hope the stand-in isn't needed but a spare is a good idea.

    1. Hope the monkey isn't needed either but there's been a few close calls. I know he will know the difference and I'm pretty sure the new one won't pass muster if the time comes, but they can but try.

    1. Me too - he (she?) is just the right size for a little person to carry around.

  5. That is the cutest Monkey and easy to see why Little will not part with it. Uh-Oh...Monkey just might get jealous of new Dragon! There are an awful lot of steps to crocheting and putting together this adorable Dragon...Well Done Grandma!! Lots of wonderful links...thank you. I actually believe today’s quote...Fear holds me back a lot!

    1. Yes, the dragon was tricky to put together - fortunately the designer has lots of really thorough videos and that made it a lot easier. All the same, I don't think I will be making another one. And yes fear always holds me back - something I struggle with all the time.

  6. You are so right. When my youngest brother was born (I was 8) I made him a stuffed dog. He hauled that thing around so long that it was disgusting. I got the great idea to make him a new one exactly like the old one. He never touched it!

    1. Exactly! I know from experience about a new toy never replacing the well-loved version. I got a Lassie dog when I was little and I loved on that thing until he was threadbare. My aunt, thinking she was doing me a favour, bought me another one and I hated it. I finally gave the original a proper burial when we moved here and even then I shed a few tears over it.

  7. What an adorable monkey!!! And oh my - that dragon is wonderful. What a lucky little boy your grandson is. :) BTW... I got sidetracked for over an hour visiting your links and following where those led. I want to find me some oyster shells to paint gold now. Surely I can find some without having to cook and eat the oysters and then clean out the shell. That is a truly beautiful craft.

    1. I'm on the hunt for some oyster shells too (our son is a chef, so maybe....). I would love to make some of those for Christmas gifts. Not about to cook and eat the yucky things though - DH is violently allergic so I wouldn't dare!

  8. A grandma is to create sweet little animals for her grandchildren, right? :) I love those sweeties you created! They would make wonderful characters in a kids book. xx

    1. I always thought a grandma should spoil grandkids and I'm doing my part (or at least trying to!). You're right - a children's book would be fun!

    1. You never know what little kids will like, so it's always 'interesting' when you make them something. Hopefully the dragon will be a hit!

  10. Oh, Mary Anne! They are gorgeous!
I bet you had great fun making them, and I’m sure they will bring hours of fun, as I’m sure they did for you making them, tee hee!

  11. They are both adorable, but I'm partial to the dragon! I really need to learn how to crochet!

    1. I thought you might like the dragon. I rather like them myself (even have a resident 'studio' dragon named Ellyron).
