Many people give their sewing machines a name - some of them really cute.  I, however, have never named a machine, why I don't know.  After spending pretty much all day on Saturday swearing at mine I have decided that a very apt name is 'PMS'  with a middle name of 'Albatross'.  She woke up on the wrong side of the bed and hissy fits (both hers AND mine) were the order of the day.  She snarled and she tangled and she grabbed hold of the fabric with her little teeth and refused to let go.  I cleaned her....I untangled her.....I rethreaded her.....and she still wasn't happy.  She didn't like the way that bobbin was threaded, and this one wasn't any better.  She didn't like a new needle either, thank you very much.  Sigh.

However, perhaps you can see that in between the hissy fits some of the quilting was actually completed.  Sort of.

And here is a close-up (clickable to embiggen I think) of the grass and the church where hopefully you can see how I add texture by simply using some of the 'fancy' stitches on PMS Albatross (when she cooperates, of course!)

  1. Thank you for the Mr Finch link. I've been a fan of his work since his early days when he had a blog. Now I follow on FB.

    1. I used to follow his blog too, but don't have much presence on facebook so haven't seen his latest work. How I would love to see his exhibition in person!

  2. So, so sorry for your frustrations with a machine who has no feelings. I have never ever named my machines either. I love your latest project. What are the dimensions? Thanks for the links.

    1. My machine gets LOTS of names, but none of them bear repeating. As for dimensions - it will finish at about 30" wide by 24" high.

  3. I'm sorry to hear the machine is playing up. When I enlarge (twice) I feel I could touch the actual building. The work on the grasses is so good.

    1. Not half as sorry as I am! I definitely have buyers remorse over this machine but until I win that lottery it will have to do. I do get to exercise my 'creative language' on a regular basis!

  4. Perhaps if you were to give her a name, she might thank you and behave....perhaps. For all those hissy fits the grass does look fabulous

    1. Had better luck today - she only pitched a fit twice, so I actually got something done. Maybe she DOES like her name!

  6. Wow, it's amazing how the quilting stitches change the picture. There is so much more depth all of a sudden. I love the grass. I can almost imagine walking through it.

chuckling at your "creative language" comment above...

    1. I think the stitching does add something to the overall look, but it's something that you have to really be up close to see. It takes awhile to do, but worth the time. And yes, there's often 'creative language' happening here at Chez Magpie!!

  7. Must be contagious I just got my machine back from being fixed and it’s not fixed! Love the textured grass!

    1. I don't think any amount of fixing is going to help this machine - it's just 'needy' and there's not much can be done about that. So sorry your machine still isn't fixed!

  11. Great use of those fancy stitches. You get such great textures. Love that Mr. Finch link too - and the way he says "bunting".

    1. It takes forever to add the stitches to the grass but the end result is worth it I think. It's not something that's overly noticeable unless you look closely though.
